Established in August 1884, Pithapur Rajah's Government College, popularly known as P.R. Government College, is one of the earliest institutions of higher education in South India. Located in Kakinada, East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh, the college was founded by Sri Rajah Rao Venkata Mahipathi Gangadhara Rama Rao Bahadur, the then zamindar of Pithapuram.
Initially established as a middle school in 1852, it became a full-fledged college in 1884 and was affiliated to the University of Madras. In 1952, the college was taken over by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. UGC conferred Autonomous status in 2000-2001, and in October 2010, it was recognized as a 'College with Potential for Excellence'.
Affiliated to Adikavi Nannaya University and accredited with NAAC 'A' Grade (CGPA 3.17), the college offers UG and PG programmes in Arts, Sciences, and Commerce across two sprawling campuses. It was the first college to encourage women's education with full fee exemptions for girl students.
