Gurucharan College, popularly known as G.C. College, established on 15 July 1935, is the first college in Assam's Barak Valley and one of the oldest educational institutions in Northeast India. Founded by the visionary Deputy Inspector of Schools Bishnu Charan Dey Purkayastha, the college was named in honor of Guru Charan Nag with a particular emphasis on promoting female education. The college was privileged to have Arun Kumar Chanda, a Bar-at-law, as its founding principal.
Initially affiliated to Calcutta University, the college later shifted to Gauhati University in 1949, and since 1994, has been affiliated to Assam University (Central), Silchar. With over 5,500 students enrolled across Arts, Science, Commerce, Business Administration and Higher Secondary sections, the college serves as the primary educational institution for students from South Assam, Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur. It has been re-accredited with NAAC 'A' Grade (CGPA 3.11) and recognized as a College with Potential for Excellence by UGC.
