Jagannath Barooah College, popularly known as J.B. College, is the oldest educational institution in Upper Assam and the second oldest in the state. It was established on 19 August 1930 as Upper Assam College and later renamed Jorhat College on 4 September 1930. On 25 June 1938, it was renamed Jagannath Barooah College in honor of the first graduate of Upper Assam, who earned his degree from Presidency College, Calcutta in 1872.
The college was established at the 'Borpatra Kutir' donated by Murulidhar Barooah in honor of his grandfather Jagannath Barooah. The founder principal was Prof. Krishna Kanta Handique, a renowned Sanskrit scholar and Padma Bhushan awardee, along with dedicated founder teachers including Tulsi Narayan Sharma, Jagneswar Sarma, Phanidhar Dutta, Prafulla Pran Changkakati, and Gunagobinda Dutta. In 2023, the college was promoted to the status of a university by the Government of Assam through the Jagannath Barooah University Act 2023.
