Founded to cater to the educational needs of the Lakhimpur district and surrounding areas, the college has played a pivotal role in transforming the educational landscape of the region.

The college was established under the leadership of prominent educationists and social workers including Suraj Dutta, Padmadhwar Chaliha, and Naranarayan Borkakati. Initially affiliated to Gauhati University, the college later came under the jurisdiction of Dibrugarh University.
