Madhab Chandra Das College, also known as M.C. Das College or Sonai College, was established in 1972 by Alhaj Tajamul Ali Mazumdar (also known as T. A. Mazumdar or Potol Mazumdar), a visionary educationist who later served as the founder principal from 1972 to 2009 . The college is situated in the Sonai sub-division of the Cachar district, approximately 16 km from Silchar town . The first piece of land for the college was donated by a local landowner on the condition that the college be named after the donor, which led to the institution being named Madhab Chandra Das College .

Originally affiliated to Gauhati University, the college's affiliation was transferred to Assam University, Silchar, in 1994 . The college has been under the deficit grant-in-aid scheme of the Government of Assam since 1985 and has received UGC recognition under Section 2(f) and 12(B) .
